Christian family evicted from Egypt town
CAIRO (AP) ? Nabil Gergis, a Coptic Christian, lived for nearly two decades in the Egyptian town of Amriya, raising his children and managing a modest business. Those ties couldn’t protect him after a sex video purportedly showing his brother with a Muslim woman began to circulate.
Angry residents in the conservative, Muslim-majority town held protests and set fire to the Gergis family businesses. None of the attackers was prosecuted. Instead, a committee of tribal elders, local lawmakers and security officials ordered the 11 members of the Gergis family ? the brother, Nabil and others ? to leave town.
The story of Amriya demonstrates one of the reasons Egypt’s Coptic Christian minority and even some in the Muslim majority feel the situation is precarious, particularly since the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak a year ago. The rule of law, they and human rights groups say, is being eclipsed by such “reconciliation councils,” trying to fill the security vacuum left by Mubarak’s fall.
“There is no law that would have found me responsible for anything, and under the law I would have never been kicked out of my home,” said Nabil Gergis. He said he, his wife and their two children do not know who to turn to protect their rights and that he feels the government has turned its back on them.
Egypt’s Copts are mourning Pope Shenouda II, who led the Church for 40 years and died on Saturday. “Baba Shenouda,” as he was called, was seen by many in the community as their biggest protector in a country where Christians make up about 10 percent of a population of 85 million.
Shenouda’s approach was deeply conservative. He was a close ally of Mubarak during the former president’s 29-year rule and used his influence behind the scenes to try to ensure some protections for Christians. But he largely resisted any public protests or pressure. His critics among the Coptic community say that left Christians’ rights dependent on personal relations rather than enforced by law.
Reconciliation meetings were not unusual under Mubarak’s regime. Muslim-Christian violence broke out occasionally in towns of the south, sometimes in local disputes that turned sectarian. Rather than prosecuting those responsible, local leaders and security officials would often insist on negotiated solutions to keep the peace ? or, critics say, because they were reluctant to confront Muslims involved in the incidents.
The Amriya case was unique because the punishment was so extensive. The town is comprised of scattered villages with some 500,000 residents, about 15 percent of them are Christian.
The incident erupted in late January, when the explicit video allegedly showing Nabil Gergis’ brother with a Muslim woman circulated on residents’ cell phones. The brother, who is married, has denied any affair.
Any sex outside of marriage is a lightning rod for controversy in the Muslim world, where a woman’s chastity is vociferously protected by her family. That a Christian man might have an affair with a Muslim woman only further fanned the flames.
The rumors sparked widespread protests by Amriya residents, who are mostly tribal and deeply traditional. Angry residents set fire to three stores owned by the Gergis’ family, which were under their homes. Some Muslim residents tried to help, but were outnumbered by the ultraconservative rioters.
Police showed up hours later and instead of investigating the attack called in the brother for questioning, Gergis said.
With tempers still high, local officials and tribal leaders held a series of meetings and decided to order the expulsion of the entire Gergis family. A Muslim family who had fired shots in the air during the protest to protect their property were initially told they must leave too, but were later allowed to return.
Amriya police argued that they could not guarantee the Gergis family’s safety in the face of angry protesters, according to security officials and the Gergis family. Last week, with the family gone, their homes were robbed of cash and other belongings they had to leave behind, Gergis said.
An Egyptian rights group that looked into the case, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, criticized the expulsion, saying the victims were forced to accept “the outcomes of illegal reconciliation processes” and to abandon their rights.
Ishak Ibrahim, a researcher with the group, warns that the breakdown of security since Mubarak’s fall could lead to an even greater dependence on such “reconciliation meetings.”
“When the state’s authority is eroded, then the community turns to its own leaders to solve the crisis,” he said. “The problem is that the outcomes are not consistent. It also means that Christians or the side that is weaker will be at a disadvantage, and so this affects all Egyptians.”
The unreliability of the law has hurt Christians in other ways. One sore point is the construction of churches, which requires permissions from security officials and was rarely granted. In response, Christians often built churches secretly, and in several instances in recent years Muslim mobs attacked the construction. Again, perpetrators of such attacks were almost never prosecuted.
Since Mubarak’s fall, there has been talk of a law putting construction of mosques and churches under equal rules, but no law has been passed.
A series of attacks over the last year has also stoked Christian fears. A year ago, a Muslim-Christian love affair led a Muslim mob to torch a church in the village of Soul, 18 miles (30 kilometers) south of Cairo. Christians protesting the burning were attacked by a mob; 13 people died and 140 injured.
In May, ultraconservative followers of the Salafi trend of Islam burnt a church in the Cairo working-class district of Imbaba and clashed with Christians, leaving 12 people dead. Many of the rioters believed that a Christian woman who fell in love with a Muslim man had converted to Islam and was being held prisoner by the church.
In October, a Cairo protest led by Copts demanding greater rights was crushed by soldiers, leaving 27 people, mostly Copts, dead.
The Gergis family is now living with relatives in Alexandria. Nabil Gergis said neither the police nor government officials have responded to his pleas for help.
“The only thing that this means is that police don’t want us in the country,” he said. “It’s a feeling that I cannot describe. My children don’t have a home anymore.”

thePlatform targets gaming consoles, tablets with new TV …
thePlatform video management system
Features added to thePlatforms mpx video publishing system could be used to create customized programming packages that would allow a family that subscribes to cable to receive a package of kids networks that could be viewed on a gaming console or tablet. Distributors could also use the tools to upsell subscribers to premium movie packages by offering subscribers promotions such as a two-week free pass to watch HBO, Showtime and other networks on a PC.
It allows you to serve more content that is relevant to those users, thePlatform VP of sales and marketing Marty Roberts told FierceCable.
Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) owns thePlatform, which is based in Seattle, and has developed the video management system for the MSOs new X1 advanced video service. Roberts said thePlatform is also working with Comcast on an app it is developing to deliver pay TV programming to the Xbox. He said operators could also use thePlatforms video management system to deliver programming to connected TVs from Samsung and other manufacturers.
Using metadata embedded in programming, thePlatform cites several other ways that its cable customers such as Comcast, Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), Cox Communications and Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) may be able to create customized packages and promotions. For example, subscribers that are history buffs could be offered a package of Memorial Day documentaries available from History Channel, Discovery Channel and HBO. Or a family with a teenager could receive an alternative set of content choices based on personal interests, like an affinity for wizards, superheroes or vampires, the company notes in Thursdays announcement.

Radar is game changer in saving endangered birds
18 hrs.
A portable radar system combined with night vision goggles and thermal imaging cameras are helping scientists find and protect a rare bird in the Caribbean, a conservation group explained Monday.
While none of these technologies are new, they are now inexpensive enough to do more than track airplanes and find thugs hiding behind enemy lines.
In the case of the Black-capped petrel, the tools are helping researchers pinpoint nesting grounds on Hispanola, the island ?shared between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
“These birds spend almost all of their time at sea and then they nest in cliff tops far into densely wooded areas,” Jessica Hardesty Norris, the seabird program director for the American Bird Conservancy, told me.
The nests ? only four of which have ever been found ? are burrowed about five feet into the ground.?
Locating the nests is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack, the researchers said. The process is complicated by the fact that the birds don’t make verbal noise as they fly, and that they fly at night.
But if they can find the nests, they can begin to figure out what’s hindering Black-capped petrel breeding success and devise strategies to protect them.?
“Are the trees being cut down? Are there introduced predators that are eating the chicks?” Adam Brown, a senior biologist with Environmental Protection in the Caribbean, told me.?
“Until we find where the nesting is taking place, we can’t get at those questions. So, the radar has really given us the foundation to begin conservation of the bird,” he added.
The radar system is mounted on a truck and able to pick up individual birds as they fly in from the sea and head towards their breeding grounds.
This January, the scientists parked their pickup truck on the coast and caught birds as they came in from the ocean. They then moved further inland, and caught them circling above nesting grounds.
Over consecutive nights, Brown explained, they team devised a system where the radar techs would locate a bird, then radio to lookouts who used night vision goggles and thermal imaging cameras to watch as the birds flew to nesting areas.
While night vision goggles and thermal imaging are fairly common tools to find nocturnal birds, “the radar really changes the game,” Norris said.
Now that team has tested out the tools on known nesting regions for the rare birds, they plan to start looking for birds in other regions, hopefully establishing a wider range and pinpointing nests for further study.
Brown, who has used radar previously to study the marbled murlett, an endangered seabird, in northern California, said he expects radar the technology to become more widespread among biologists.
It could be useful, for example, to study insects and bats. More sophisticated radar systems, such as those used by the National Weather Service, he noted, could even be used to monitor bird migrations.
“They’ll be able to figure out when are thousands and millions of birds migrating over the Gulf of Mexico, for instance,” he said. “And we’ll be able to monitor it all remotely.”

Street Fighter x Tekken (Xbox 360/PS3) Review | Video Games …
When it comes to fighting games, I prefer them to be pretty accessible as they aren?t my forte. Last year saw both Mortal Kombat and Marvel vs. Capcom 3, two very?accessible?fighting games?that were easy to play and have fun with right off the bat. Comparatively, Street Fighter?x Tekken is a very difficult fighting game that?will take a long time to master. Basically, it is every hardcore fighting gamer?s?dream, but a casual fighting fan?s nightmare.

It isn?t that Street Fighter x Tekken doesn?t try to get you into the experience early; after the heart pounding opening cinematic, the game asks if you want to check out the tutorial?trust me when I say that you absolutely must do it! In that tutorial, you?ll start off easily enough by doing a few punches and kicks, grabbing an enemy,?learning about the Cross Gauge, and?switching your characters.?By the time you wrap up the tutorial though, you will be bombarded by an insane amount of different move types. The various special moves available include: Boost Combo, Cross Rush, Quick Combo, Super Charge, Ex Special Movies, Cross Cancel, Switch Cancel, Super Art, Cross Assault, Cross Art, and Pandora.
For someone like me, this was extremely overwhelming and a lot to memorize. I did manage to finish the?tutorial, despite how hard a Cross Cancel was, and went in the Arcade (story) mode.?Upon entering my first fight,?everything I had learned quickly muddled itself into one gigantic pile of button mashing and I was lost.?To make matters worse, Arcade mode doesn?t ease you into anything and teach you the different players, it expects you to already know exactly how they play.
Instead of including a full story interweaving each of the 38 fighters, you pick two at the outset and stick with them throughout the 30 or so?minute campaign. Although each fighter will have a slightly different story, they all focus on a meteor containing Pandora?s Box falling to earth. All the fighters featured in the game head to Antarctica and the fighting begins, and never stops. The game doesn?t take a break at all between the fights to tell any sort of story, you just enter fight after fight, reach Antarctica, and win the final battle. It was disappointing to see so little work put into the story mode, even for a game that isn?t focused on single player.

Street Fighter x Tekken is all about the multiplayer aspect of fighting and it does a great job of including a tonne of modes. For anyone looking for some offline mayhem, you can grab three friends and have some great times. It was a little daunting at first when I played against a Street Fighter veteran, but after?many hours of solo playtime, I began to see some improvement and was able to beat him once or twice. When it comes to multiplayer though, most modes easily belongs to the online portion.
You have Ranked Matches which pit you against anyone in the world, Endless Battles that have you fighting until you lose, and the insanely fun Scramble Battles that have 4 people fighting at once. Sadly though, every match I entered into (on both the Xbox 360 and PS3) was extremely laggy, with the Scramble Battles doubly so. The game would stutter in the middle of the match, leading to a freeze during one of my combos and having the other guy reverse it quite easily. Not only that, the sound effects would constantly be disappearing and reappearing in the fight. I?d be in the middle of a combo and would hear the first punch, then nothing for the next six hits, and I?d just hear the enemy fall to the ground. In a game as fast paced as this one, knowing when you get hit is essential, but you rarely will know.
A patch will obviously be released sometime in the future to fix these issues, but anyone who picked the game up at launch expecting to be able to jump online and climb the leaderboards?will be very agitated. Hopefully Capcom also adds a rematch button at the end of every fight because if I just finish a tense fight with a player, I want to be able to replay them and have another epic fight. As it is right now, you?ll just have to message them and hope they respond.

One feature that Capcom has implemented perfectly has to be the inclusion of Gems. Essentially, these are boosters that you can place on each individual character and?will activate after certain parameters have been met. So, say that you?ve equipped a gem that increases your damage output by 10%. You can set it so that once you block a few times, it will activate, give you a huge power boost, and hopefully be enough to help you win the fight.
Fans of the genre may feel as though this is ruining the core experience of the game, but I feel it improves it. By having dozens of different gems available to every character, it allows each gamer to play to their strengths. Say you?re more of a defensive person who wants the Cross Gauge to fill up so you can unleash a powerful Cross Assault. Equip gems that help the gauge to build up and sit back while the opponent hits you, only to perform a huge attack that turns the tide and makes you the winner.

Underneath all of the online issues and lack of story lies the deepest fighting game available on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Hardcore fighting fans will likely find Street Fighter x Tekken?to be one of the most rewarding experiences they?ve had in quite some time and shouldn?t hesitate to pick this one up. Sadly though, casual fight fans?may be a little overwhelmed and unless you want to invest many, many hours before you start to learn the game, I suggest you pick up Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 or Mortal Kombat.
